âWhat should we do now?â Lizzie asked.
âI think I should pay a visit to the tavern. Someone there might be convinced to supply the information we need.â
âIâm coming with you,â Lizzie stated.
âIâve come to accept the fact that every time I say Iâm going to do something on my own ye want to go with me. This time, Iâm putting my foot down. No. You can noâ come with me.â
âIâd like to know why.â She stopped, hands on hips, awaiting his answer.
âHave ye ever been to the docks before these past few days?â He knew the answer to his question, but thought it worth repeating.
âNo.â
âThen ye donât understand the danger it poses for ye.â She was an obstinate lass. He wasnât sure the threat of danger would deter her, but it was all he had to frighten her with.
âJust for me? What about you? Are you not in danger as well?â
âNo. I am armed and capable of taking care of myself.â He could see her impatience and anger beginning to bubble over.
âWell, I donât care what you think. Iâm coming with you or I will go on my own.â She stormed past him, toward the doors, but he reached out, grabbing her arm and spinning her to face him.
He had no doubt that sheâd go on her own given the chance. He could stand here and argue with her until at some point she finally gave in, but they didnât have the luxury of time. âFine. Come with me, but ye must do as I say, do ye understand?â
âDo you think I lack intelligence. Of course I understand.â He had clearly angered her once again.
The fire in her eyes fanned his own flames. Flames of desire. Lord how heâd love to kiss her into submission. The problem was, he couldnât be sure he wouldnât be the one submitting. As much as he hated to admit it, the lass had cast a spell on him. Seeing her luscious curves, her plump, tempting lips, and a cascade of golden curls framing her face, it was all he could do to behave like the gentleman he needed to be and not the rogue he was.
